Medjugorje
One of the best-known shrines in the world became famous through the apparitions of the Virgin Mary, which began in 1981. Since then Medjugorje has been, along with Sarajevo, one of the most visited tourist centres in Bosnia and Herzegovina, visited by about a million people from all over the world every year. Unlike the shrine in Lourdes, which with its 6 million tourist-pilgrims a year has become a true commercial paradise, the Medjugorje shrine has still kept its original charm, in which pilgrims find peace in faith. The gathering centre at the Shrine of the Queen of Peace, as the Medjugorje shrine is officially called, is the Church of St James in the centre of the village.
